Flydigi Finally Goes Xbox! First Impressions: Vader 5S vs. Vader 5 Pro

Hey everyone, Ray here from GadgetHyper! If you've been following the controller scene lately, you know Flydigi has been killing it. After the massive hype around the Vader 4 Pro and the recent Vader 5 Pro, they've finally done it—they've officially entered the Xbox-licensed arena with the Vader 5S.

Vader 5S Front View

I just got my hands on it, and while I initially intended to write a standalone quick review, it became impossible not to compare it to its "big brother," the Vader 5 Pro. Is it just a "lite" version, or does it bring something new to the table?

Here's my first impression of the Vader 5S after the first 24 hours of "hands-on" time.

The Context: The $20 Difference

Vader 5S

$59.99

Xbox licensed + wired connection

Vader 5 Pro

$79.99

Wireless freedom + premium features

For that $20 drop, we lose the wireless freedom (standard for a brand's first-ever Xbox licensed controller) but gain a few interesting tweaks.

First Impressions & Build

Out of the box, it's unmistakably Xbox.

Vader 5S vs Vader 5 Pro Branding Comparison
  • The Look: The Flydigi logo is gone, replaced by that iconic Xbox Home button. There's a dedicated Share button now, and the bottom center proudly shouts "FLYDIGI."
  • The Grip: Here is the first compromise. The Vader 5 Pro has those premium rubberized grips. The 5S? It's hard plastic with some anti-slip texture. It feels a bit different—likely to hit that $59 price point or satisfy specific licensing tiers—but it's still solid in the hand.

The "Secret Sauce": The Safe-Cracker Tension Ring 🔒

This was the biggest surprise for me. I expected the 5S to just inherit the stepless tension rings from the Pro. I was wrong.

Flydigi changed the mechanism to a stepped/notched adjustment. It feels exactly like turning the dial on a high-end safe. If you've ever used the Beitong KP40D, it's that exact vibe—very tactile, very mechanical.

Tension Ring Mechanism Close-up
  • The Win: It's much harder to accidentally bump your tension settings during a sweaty Warzone session.
  • The Fun: I found myself fidgeting with the "click-click-click" while waiting for matches to load. It's incredibly satisfying.

Features: What's Still There?

The core "Vader DNA" is very much intact. If you want a deep dive into how the tech specs stack up, you can check out my previous breakdown of the Vader 5 Pro vs. 4 Pro here.

Quick Recap:

The "S" Trade-offs (The Reality Check)

  1. Wired Only: It's a tethered life for now due to licensing. But hey, zero latency for the competitive crowd, right?
  2. Back Buttons: We went from 4 back buttons (M1-M4) down to two (M1/M2). Personally, I'm a "the more buttons the better" kind of guy, so I miss the extra two. However, if you were worried about the longevity of the M3/M4 hinges, this is one less thing to stress about.
  3. No Charging Dock: The pogo pins are gone.
  4. The "Exchange": While we lost the dock, we gained a 3.5mm jack. So please, use it to be nice to your teammates in the lobby (winks).

Easter Egg: Elite Bag Compatibility 🎁

Here's a fun discovery I made while testing the Vader 5S: it fits perfectly into Flydigi's Elite carrying case! This bag was originally launched alongside the Vader 5 Pro, but since I noticed the 5S and 5 Pro share very similar dimensions and form factors, I decided to test it out.

Vader 5S with Elite Carrying Bag

Spoiler alert: it's a perfect match! The Elite bag cradles the 5S just as nicely as it does the Pro. Because of this happy accident, we've now added a bundle option at GadgetHyper where you can grab the Vader 5S together with the Elite bag. If you're someone who travels with your controller or just wants premium protection, this combo is definitely worth considering.

Final Thoughts

The Vader 5S feels like Flydigi's "Greatest Hits" album, but on a budget. If you are a die-hard Xbox console player who has been jealous of the PC guys getting all the cool Flydigi tech, this is your entry ticket. It brings that high-end "custom" feel to the console at a very reasonable price.

This isn't a full review—just my initial "wow" (and "oh") moments.

What do you guys think? Is the notched tension ring a better move than the stepless one? Let's chat in the comments!
